Avoid This Nightmare Hotel

I don't even know where to begin with this place. Let's start with the fact that they claim to be a four-star hotel. Are you kidding me? This joint wouldn't even pass for a decent motel. I only booked here because it was close to the US Consulate General, where I had a visa interview. Big mistake. First off, they promise some amenities like towels, slippers, and an iron. Sounds great, right? Well, guess what? No slippers. So, there I was, tiptoeing around on their ancient laminate floor, to the bathroom and to my bed feeling like I was in a bad sitcom. And breakfast? Forget about it. They claim it's all fresh baked pastry. Yeah, right. The pastries were colder than Antarctica, and the coffee from the capsule coffee machine in a paper cup tasted like it came from a gas station bathroom. they can’t even afford to put a proper cup for yore coffee. But here's the real kicker. In the wee hours of the second night, at around 4 AM, nature called, and I headed for the bathroom. To my dismay, the door refused to yield. There I stood, outside the bathroom, in a desperate predicament, quite literally on the brink of wetting myself. As I struggled to gain entry, a terrifying thought crossed my mind: "What if this had happened while I was already inside?" To make matters worse, I couldn't even call for assistance, as phones aren't exactly waterproof. I call the front desk, and this dude shows up with a metal thing to open it and said well they told me yo try this if it like it's no big deal and it happens often! Oh, and let's talk about the noise. Sure, it's downtown, so I expected some hustle and bustle. But come on, there are inventions to reduce noise, right? It seems like they don't care about investing in those. I might as well have slept on a construction site. And don't even get me started on their printing fees. Two bucks a page? Are they printing on gold leaf or something? I had to drop serious cash just to get my documents ready for the consulate. In short, this hotel was a disaster. Do yourself a favor and steer clear. You'll thank me later.

Terrible front desk associate named Max

Arpita A on Jan 24, 2024

I had a terrible experience with one of the Hôtel associates named Maxemelean who sits at the front desk on Tuesdays. He was extremely rude and doesn’t know how to treat the customers. There was no microwave in the room at the hotel. Every hotel in the world including USA and Canada I have ever lived in make sure to provide or let me use a microwave at the reception or back room or restaurant. Other colleagues of Max were very nice and helpful with everything. But this person changed my opinion about the hotel staff completely. He not only refused for me to use the microwave in the common room, refused to do it for me, and asked me to walk outside in -16 degrees centigrade temperature to a next door restaurant which was not even affiliated with the hotel to heat my food order. So, basically he think a restaurant I didn’t eat in or stay with would be happy to help, but the hotel I was staying in for the last three days was not willing to let me use their microwave at the back of the front desk. This has never happened to me in any other hotel ever in life. Most hotel staff try to go out of their way to make their guests feel comfortable and welcome. I am obviously never going to stay in this hotel or any other hotel chains this hotel owns ever again all thanks to Mr Max.

Nice and Clean but do not eat breakfast or plan long showers

Very nice hotel, clean, comfortable beds, unique decor, close to Bell center with walking distance. Overall experience was positive except the next morning when one of the shower stopped completely while someone was in it and the second one was not working at all. Had to wait a few minutes for the water to come back. Breakfast was not fresh at all, croissant and viennoiseries where hard as rock, had to dip it in coffee to soften it. If freshness is not available, do not put them out!

Convenient, small and friendly Hotel

Good central position in the City with nearby public parking available at reasonable price. Small Hotel, boutique style decor, very clean. Staff very friendly and helpful. There is a self serve breakfast option included which is convenient. Because of the size of the Hotel I was very aware of street noise during the first night’s stay but the second night I did not notice it as much. The bed was comfortable; however the pillows were too firm for my liking. There is a restaurant adjoining and plenty of nearby dining options.

Intimate and nice, but could do better

We stayed in the Executive Suite 3 nights for our 25th anniversary. The small hotel was nice, staff very accommodating, lovely room, and great location, but for the price paid we were disappointed by a few areas... We looked forward to the 2 "rainfall massage showers" in the spacious shower enclosure, but the water pressure is not enough to power even one of the massage showers. These are supposed to spray out from the wall, but there was only enough pressure to spray maybe 2 or 3 inches out -- certainly not enough to even hit your body! Even just the "rainfall" felt more of a "sprinkle" than a heavy rain. The room seemed clean, but the upholstery on the couch, chairs, etc., appeared to need a thorough cleansing. For the size of the room the furnishings also seemed fairly sparse. For the price, we expected to have daily room cleaning/service, but instead if you want fresh towels, etc., you must ask at the front desk. I understood that type of "no entry to rooms" during the pandemic, but expect daily service now. Interesting that we also found it difficult to get washcloths (the small towels) -- none were in the room and the first time we asked they obviously did not understand as we still received more handtowels instead. The second day we were finally able to receive some by asking another person. There is temporary parking out front while checking in and bringing in luggage, but the closest parking after that is in the underground garage of the hotel next door at inflated prices over what they charge their own guests. (They show CAD $20 for their guest, but CAD$40/night for guest of the Chez Swann. We realized that hotel, Le Mount Stephen, is a VERY nice full service hotel as you must walk through their lobby to get in/out of the parking. (We would consider staying there if we visit Montreal again.) Finally the included breakfast was not as expected either. We only at their our fist morning because even the croissants were very tough and chewy like they had been sitting for days. The next 2 days we paid for breakfast at other locations which had much better breakfasts (including very tender fresh French croissants.) Overall, I wish we could rate them higher, but at over CAD$500 per night we paid, we expected much better. If they were to fix some of the issues, it could rate higher (i.e. provide daily service, better breakfast, increase water pressure or use different fixtures that better work with low pressure)
